Ashphalt Shingles

Asphalt roofing shingles are among the most affordable and most durable roofing material available. They are the most popular choice of residential roof material in Canada for a good number of reasons: they are available in lots of colors, are very durable, offer fire resistance, and can be repaired and maintained over time.
Natural buildup of fungus, moss and debris from the trees can shorten the life of the roof if left unattended.
Ventilation of the attic also plays a major role in how long shingle roofs lasts. Many shingle roofers fail to properly calculate the ventilation needs of the roof. You won't notice a problem until it is too late!
Bad ventilation can result:
- Your roof shingle manufacturer warranty to be voided (shingle roof will not last for the guaranteed time if the heat builds up in the attic)
- A build up of mold in the attic
- Increase in home heating and cooling costs (more energy is needed to either cool or heat the house)
Proper roof ventilation allows you to enjoy your asphalt shingle roof for a long time without re roofing. Our expert roofers will check your ventilation during roof inspection and give estimates for a long lasting solution.

Installing Roof Shingles
The first step in roof shingles installation is the removal of old shingles from the roof, followed by inspection of plywood for damage. A roofing shovel is usually used for shingle removal, whereby the debris is collected in the waste container.
Second step in roof shingle installation is the addition of flashing on various roof parts, such as chimneys and vent systems. Flashings prevent water from leaking in the spots where drainage usually occurs. To stop build up of ice dams, a metal drip edge is installed along the perimeter of the roof. Flashing is also installed in the valleys (where 2 sections of roof meet), for additional protection.

Once all the flashing is installed, a layer of felt paper is added. On the edges, a special "winter" layer is laid, while the rest of the roof is covered with regular felt paper.
Asphalt roofing installation starts from the bottom of the roof upwards. The first row of shingles is added upside down, followed by a regular roofing shingles installation pattern afterwards. The joints of the shingles are installed in the staggered manner, which provides the most efficient water flow, good residential roof design, and prolongs shingle life span.
Once the top of the roof reached during shingle roofing installation, shingles from one side are nailed on the other side, and vice versa.
Shingle roof installation does end here though, as the top of the roof, or "roof ridge" must be shingled as well. The method for installing asphalt roof shingles on the ridge is different. A shingle is cut into 3 pieces, and two 45 degree cuts are made on the edges of each piece (for style). Separate pieces are then nailed to the roof.
Valley and chimney require custom asphalt roof installation. Each row of shingles that meets either valley of the chimney must be cut. Roofing cement must be used instead of nails, to minimize all possibility of drainage.
Asphalt shingle roof installation must be performed in dry weather, with dry materials. If you are looking for high quality workmanship that will last for decades, let JDM Roofing install roofing shingles on your roof.
